about
Matthew Caldwell is a native of Hampton, Virginia who has been in love with music for as long as he can remember. It is said that he began playing piano at the age of four. While attending Phoebus High School in Hampton as a trombonist, he proudly served as a member of the concert band, jazz band, all-city jazz band and drum major of the marching band where he wrote and arranged songs for the band to play. He received a music scholarship to THEE Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. While at NSU he was a member of the jazz band, the concert band, the wind ensemble, the Spartan Elite jazz combo and he was a proud member of the Norfolk State University Marching Spartan Legion marching band. He obtained a Bachelors of Music in Music Education and taught in Norfolk Public Schools for 8 years as a piano accompanist, elementary school music teacher and middle school band director. He enrolled at Regent University to pursue a Masters in Educational Leadership and Administration.
He most recently taught in Hampton City Schools as the proud band director at Phoebus High School where he served for 5 years. His passion for music is shown daily as he shares his gift with those that he reaches. He currently serves his beloved Alma Mater as the Music Director of the Theatre Company at Norfolk State University. Musically outside of education, he has served as musical director for NJ Productions for 7 years where he composed and arranged songs for various stage plays and theatrical productions. He has played for several national recording artists such as Ben Tankard, Lisa McClendon, Benita Jones, William Murphy, Donnie McClurkin, Johnathan Dunn, Denice Williams, Chokolate, Yazarah, Keli Nicole, D’atra Hicks, Mel Holder, Tim Bush and opened for many others. He has also played for some of Virginia’s finest artists from K'bana Blaq, Ashley Felder, Alex Holt and Free Worship, to Markise Hicks and the MO band, Unconditional and the list goes on. Professionally he has done studio work on many projects in various genres which also includes string compositions and arrangements. His own personal project will be released in the coming months.
